Zunar announnces upcoming new book “Fight Through Cartoons” My story of harassment, intimidation and jail – Zunar

Zunar has unofficially announced his upcoming book titled "Fight Through Cartoons" My story of harassment, intimidation and jail – Zunar. The book is scheduled to be available in stores by the second week of May 2019. In this book Zunar tells his stories of harassment and intimidation that he has faced as a political cartoonist in Malaysia, covering the period between August 2009 – 9 May 2018. He details about the banning of his books, the arrests, office raids, the travel ban, the 9 sedition charges and the harassment against the printers and book stores. In 257 pages full of text supported by images and cartoons, Zunar also exposes the strategies he used to overcome all the hardship by using laughter and humor. He also explains the methods that he used in making complicated issues into simple ones. Zunar also outlines the philosophy that made him refuse to stop fighting through cartoons even after being slapped with 9 sedition charges, that carry more that 20 years jail term as punishment.

Pemalsuan karya-karya saya dalam media sosial

Pada 8 April 2019, saya telah membuat laporan kepada Suruhanjaya Komunikasi dan Multimedia Malaysia mengenai pemalsuan karya-karya kartun saya yang dilakukan dalam media sosial. No aduan tersebut ialah 0419-01-0001200-CPCB. Aduan yang dibuat ialah mengenai dua pemegang akaun Facebook dan satu pemegang akaun Twitter yang telah memalsukan, menyiar dan menyebar kartun-kartun saya yang telah diubah. Mereka telah mengubah, mengedit, share, mengubah makna, mengubah karya seni saya melalui akaun media sosial masing-masing. Pemegang akaun tersebut adalah: 1. Akaun Neezam Perkasa. Beliau membuat kesalahan itu pada 1 April 2019 atau sebelumnya dalam akaun facebooknya (disertakan screen shot postingnya). 2. Akaun Roslan Bian. Beliau membuat kesalahan itu pada 29 Mac 2019 atau sebelumnya dalam akaun facebooknya (disertakan screen shot postingnya). 3. Akaun Tun Faisal. Beliau telah membuat kesalahan itu pada 31 Mac 2019 atau sebelumnya dalam akaun twitter. Dia juga menyiarkan satu lagi kartun saya yang diubahsuai pada 7 April 2019 (disertakan screen shot postingnya). Bersama ini juga disertakan karya asli saya yang disiar pada Disember 2015 dan Oktober 2012.

Ini adalah satu kes jelas pelanggaran hakcipta dan pencerobohan hak intelektual. Selain dari mengubah, merekayasa dan mengedit, mereka juga menambah kata-kata yang berniat jahat dan memfitnah bagi memusnahkan reputasi saya. Pada ketika aduan dibuat, pemegang2 akaun tersebut mungkin telah memadamkan posting tersebut, tetapi ia tidak bererti mereka terlepas dari kesalahan jenayah ini.

TUNTUTAN

Oleh itu, saya akan mengambil jalan undang-undang bagi mengatasi masalah ini. 1. Semua pemegang2 akaun yang disebut di atas diberi masa tujuh (7) hari waktu bekerja untuk membuat satu status permohonan maaf terbuka kepada saya dalam akaun Facebook dan Twitter masing-masing. Dan kata-kata permohonan maaf ini terlebih dahulu mesti diluluskan oleh saya. Untuk tujuan ini, mereka boleh menghantarnya kepada saya melalui email [email protected] atau mesej ke Akaun Facebook Zunar Cartoonist Fan Club. 2. Kegagalan berbuat demikian akan disusuli dengan tindakan undang-undang. Saya telah berbincang dengan peguam saya mengenai perkara ini. 3. Tindakan ini tidak terlakluk kepada tiga pemilik akuan tersebut saja. Team saya akan terus menjejak perbuatan tidak bertanggungjawab ini dalam media sosial untuk diambil tindakan. Zunar 8 April 2019

The fabricating of my cartoons on social media

THE REPORT

On 8 April 2019, I have made a report to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission regarding the fabricating activities of my cartoons on social medias. The report number is 0419-01-0001200-CPCB. In that report, I named two Facebook account holders and one Twitter account holder for fabricating and editing my original artworks prior to publishing the fabricated works on their social media. They were: 1. Facebook account holder 'Neezam Perkasa'. He posted a modified cartoon on the 1st of April 2019 or before (attached herewith is the screen shot). 2. Facebook account holder 'Roslan Bian'. He posted a modified cartoon on the 29th of March 2019 or before (attached herewith is the screen shot). 3. Twitter account holder 'Tun Faisal'. He posted a modified cartoon on the 31st of March 2019 or before. He also posted another modified cartoon on the 1st of April 2019 (attached herewith are the screen shots). 4. It is a serious case of infringement and violation of an intellectual property. 5. Beside fabricating and editing, they also added slanderous and malicious words that could paramount to destroying my reputation. By the time this statement is released, they may have deleted the said postings, but that does not mean they can get away with it. Attached herewith also are the original works of mine which was published in December 2015 and October 2012.

THE DEMAND

I hereby demand the three of them as below: 1. To make a public apology to me and it must be posted as a status in the respective social medias. The words of those apologies must first require an approval from me prior to posting. In order to do that, they can email me at [email protected] or send a direct message to Facebook Zunar Cartoonist Fan Club. 2. They are given seven (7) days to do so. Failing which, I will not hesitate to take legal actions against them. I have already consulted my lawyers pertaining this matter. 3. This stern action is not subjected to just the three of them. My team will keep a vigilant eye towards these irresponsible activities on social medias for similar actions to be taken. Zunar 8 April 2019

An Anti-Fake News Act is now a reality and it is the daily reality of Zunar by Cartooniana

THE FAKE NEWS LAW IS A NEW WEAPON TO COVER UP CORRUPTION

The Government of Malaysia is now introducing Fake News Law

THE government uses main stream medias to hide the truths including corruptions. The "one-sided and bias reporting" style, making people lose faith in main stream medias. People turn to internet and social medias as alternatives. As the corruptions grow bigger, more people abandon the mainstream medias and start to subscribe to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and blogs where they can find credible information.

As an example, in the 1MDB scandal, Prime Minister Najib says he did nothing wrong. On the contrary, there are abundant of reports via internet on how the American DOJ had seized properties worth billions of dollars that are related to 1MDB, as well as the Indonesian and Swiss authorities.  PM Najib is running scared that more exposures will affect his 'already shaken' position in the upcoming General Election. He had to introduce another draconian law to survive. The Fake News Law is a new weapon to cover up corruptions.

Zunar gifts “KETAWA PINK-PINK” new cartoon book to ex-judge who unbanned his books before

On October 9th 2014, Court of Appeal instructed the Malaysian government to unban two of Zunar's cartoon books; 1 Funny Malaysia and Perak Darul Kartun. Three judges; Datuk Mohammad Ariff Md Yusof, Datuk Varghese Goerge Varughese and Datuk Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat made a collective decision to that. Last Saturday (10th March), Zunar had an opportunity to meet Datuk Mohamad Ariff who is now retired. Apart from thanking him, Zunar also gifted him his latest cartoon book, KETAWA PINK-PINK as a token of appreciation for honourably facing enforcers in pursuit of upholding the law.

COURT UPDATE: Zunar files challenge over ‘Sapuman’ ban Zunar filed a judicial review challenge at the High Court in Kuala Lumpur today (2nd Jan 2018) to set aside the ban on his book “Sapuman: Man of Steal." Home minister and the government of Malaysia are name as respondents in the judicial review application.'The ban was announce in October last year by the Malaysian government because "the book was a threat to public order." Beside challenging the ban, Zunar is also seeking a declaration that the ban order is declared void and illegal, on the grounds that it is ultra vires of Section 7 of the Publication and Printing Presses Act 1984 (PPPA), violates Articles 5 (personal liberty), 8 (equality) and 10 (1)(a) (freedom of expression) of the Federal Constitution. He is also seeking general and special damages. “Sapuman: Man of Steal” – a collection of Zunar's political cartoons, was published in 2015.

GEORGE TOWN, Malaysia -- Walking through the lobby of the hotel he is staying in in the Malaysian island state of Penang, Zunar took in the high ceilings and polished tiles and said wryly: "It's much better than where I stayed last time." This time last year the satirical cartoonist, who rarely uses his given name of Zulkifli Anwar Ulhaque, was due to open an exhibition of his work at Penang's George Town Literary Festival when the police swooped in and arrested him on sedition charges. He spent the three days of the event in a cell. A perennial irritant for Malaysia's Prime Minister Najib Razak, Zunar has become emblematic of the government's attempts to limit free speech and political opposition. He currently faces nine sedition charges that could amount to more than 40 years of jail time. Five of his books have been banned, but they are still being printed -- at night, with the name of the printer blacked out by a label that says: "scratch to win." They are widely circulated online, often being shared many thousands of times on social media. The attacks on him have given him a renewed determination to "fight through cartoons," he said in an interview at this year's festival that ran Nov. 24-26. "Cartoons are very effective, that's why there are many cartoonists in jail. This is a very, very powerful tool of communication ... it's a universal language. It can go across boundaries of age and social groups."
