Zunar’s sedition charges are set to be heard on March 9, 2016 by the Sessions Court. However, the date is just for case management. Currently the charges are pending decision by the High Court on a separate case challenging the constitutionality of the Sedition Act. The challenge was filed by Zunar’s lawyer N. Surendran on October 15, 2014.

On his Twitter account on February 10, 2015, Zunar had posted his cartoons as a reaction to then Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim’s five-year imprisonment sentence against his sodomy charges
“The lackeys in black robes are proud of their sentence. The rewards from the political masters must be plenty,” one of the tweets accompanying the image read. “Today Malaysia is seen as a country without law,” another read.

Following this, he was arrested by a group of five policemen on February 11 at 9pm at his residence and was taken to the Dang Wangi police station. He was released on bail on February 13.

On April 3, 2015, Zunar was charged with the nine counts of Sedition charges, which could see him facing 43-years of life in prison under Section 4 (1)(C) of the Sedition Act for voicing out his opinions. Zunar then filed challenge to the nine sedition charges on November 6, 2015, at the Sessions Court in Kuala Lumpur when the case was called up for case management.

It is now pending decision on Surendran’s challenge on the draconian act.

No trial dates of the actual sedition case has been fixed as of yet.
